The woodwork collection
of the museum is rich and varied attributed to different Islamic
styles and regions .A big number of the Egyptian pieces excavated at al-
sira , and many places were brought from
old Islamic buildings representing doors , window, cupboards,
furniture units and architectural elements.
The wood attributed to the Umayyad period
6580-750 A.D. the Tulunid decorative
wood panels are characterized with slant cut style which was practiced on
stucco wall panels .
The Fatimid wood objects in the museum
969-1171 A.D. are characterized with its unprecedented high richness with
original and developed techniques in carving and decorations employing the
Kufic writing as a main decorative element. The Fatimid decorative
iconographies conveyed and depicted the daily life activities in the 11 and
12 centuries . we see the original rare Fatimid movable Mihrabs .
In the Ayyubid woods 1171-1250A.D.
The Fatimid style
continued but the Kufic developed To the Ayyubid Naskhi. The museum
has a lot and rich wood works from the Mamluk period 1250-1517 A.D.
revealing the originality and decorative innovation .
The geometric
and star shaped designs reached a high degree of perfection on the Mamluk
wood with no figurations . the Mamluk woods are pulpits , boxes , cases ,
doors , cupboards , Mashrabiyyas and furniture units veneered with ivory and
ebony mosaics . this industry began to decline at the end of the 15th
century with a period of revival at the 17-18th century .
