About The Collection

The Ottomans ruled Egypt from Istanbul through Pashawat. They were brilliant military strategists but were poor colonial administrators. Their direct involvement did not go beyond enforcing tax collection. Otherwise the Ottomans exercised minimal control and relied on the Mamluke army. This neglect opened the way for the French to invade Egypt in 1798.
