Glass
The museum collection of glass is very rare
and unique with its incomparable group of mosque glass lamps . The glass
lamps in Arabic is Mishkah. It is mentioned in the verse 35 of Surat al-Nour
in a Quranic explanation of the glass lamp and its using. The museum mosque
glass lamps were mostly found in an unused store in the mosque of sultan Hassan ( d. 1361 ).
The excavation at al-Fustat and other Islamic
areas provided the museum with a big number of glass vessels, small phials
and glass fragments through which we could study the evolution of Islamic
glass industry. The pre-Islamic techniques and shapes were still in use to
a late period within the Islamic spirit and taste.
