A copper perforated strainer with
holes differently shaped ranging from foliated holes, festooned
holes and a sequence of lotus shaped holes. The strainer, 37cm
diameter and 9cm height was found in Saedana Island, located 40km
far from Hurghada in the |
Red Sea and is part of a commercial
boat’s contents that had sanked in the area. |

The boat was transporting potteries, porcelain and condiments. The
strainer is probably a daily use utensil chronologists refer it
most probably to the 18th century. The object, when
found, was covered |
with rust and few calcifications were obviously seen while almost
30% of the total surface is missing. |
A microscopic examination revealed the presence of coprite,
azurite and malachite; marine algae were sticking to the surface.
Restoration started by consolidating the strainer before the
mechanical cleaning in order to remove the rust. |
Calcifications were removed by ultra sonic and missing parts were
filled with epoxy applied on cardboard without affecting the
metallic original part. |
the whole strainer was then dumped in
water with 1%BTA, isolation took place after drying the object and
silica application terminated the restructuring of the original
shape of the strainer. |
